Mentoring Programme

UKELA is developing a mentoring programme to provide students with access to UKELA’s practising members - both as a source of practical information and as a friendly face at UKELA events. Mentors should also benefit under the scheme through the opportunity to positively affect students’ futures by sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Mentors needed

If you are a UKELA member who can help support a younger member of UKELA please consider becoming a Mentor. Currently our rate of applications for mentoring is outstripping supply of Mentors. The arrangement is fairly informal - you can spend as much time as you can spare. It doesn't need face to face meetings on a regular basis but just the ability to provide a friendly ear, support and advice to students and post graduates who need guidance in developing their careers in Environmental Law. If you can help please return the form below.

How to apply

The scheme is open to UKELA student members only with the purpose of introducing students to UKELA members practising in areas of environmental law, environmental consulting and any other profession related to the management of the environment. The Mentor will provide the Student with general information and guidance about the Student’s chosen career.

Students wishing to participate in the scheme should complete the Mentoring Scheme Application Form by clicking on the link below and return the form to Claire Collis (details on the form).

Guidelines for Mentors and Students

Students will be allocated Mentors as and when a suitable match becomes available. The mentorship should run for 1 year. On receipt of contact details the Student is expected to make contact with his/her Mentor within 3 weeks and arrange an initial meeting if possible. Students should look to get the following out of the scheme:

- at least one meeting with your Mentor – preferably at the beginning of the Mentorship
- general advice and guidance from your Mentor via telephone calls/emailing and further meetings as necessary

Feedback

We would be grateful if you would contact us if:

· Your Mentor fails to respond to your initial contact.
· Your Mentor does not adhere to the objectives set out in the above Guidelines (all Mentors receive a copy of the Guidelines).
· You experience any problems with your Mentor.
