Two mooting competitions for university students, pupil barristers and trainee solicitors are held each year: the 'Lord Slynn of Hadley Mooting Trophy Competition' and the 'UKELA Student Prize Moot'.

2010 Moot Competitions

The winners of the 2010 junior trophy were James Corbet Burcher and Clodagh Powers from UCL (runners up were Anita Davies and Ruth Davis, City University); the winners of the Lord Slynn trophy were Rebecca Clutton and Ned Westaway of Francis Taylor Buildings (runners up were Andrew Jenkins and Nicholas Wellesley Hoggard). Thanks for all who entered, particularly those who got through to the semi-finals in London. We had a record number of entries on a problem which concerned the new civil penalties regime.
The semi-finals where judged by Richard Kimblin, of No 5 Chambers, and Prof Mark Poustie, of Strathclyde University. The final was judged by Lord Justice Carnwath, UKELA's President. We are very grateful to No 5 Chambers, which sponsors the moot, along with Lawtext Publishing which provides an annual subscription for Environmental Law and Management to the winners.
As you will see from the photos, Ned Westaway, also won the 2009 trophy.

2009 Moot Competitions

UKELA's 2009 student moot final was held on February 10th before Lord Justice Carnwath, UKELA's President. Master of the moot was Richard Kimblin of No 5 Chambers, which kindly provided the cash prizes, and the final was generously hosted by the Practical Law Company.
There were two moot competitions and a record number of entries: one for undergraduates and the Lord Slynn Moot which is for pupils, trainee solicitors and those on the LPC or BVC. The problem was topical - about Protective Costs Orders.
