Join us for a short lunchtime seminar to hear about the recent judgment in which the High Court ruled that the government’s Net Zero Strategy breached the Climate Change Act. 

We have speakers from 3 of the organisations involved in bringing this legal challenge. They will explain why the action was brought, what the ruling means and what next steps might be for all parties.

Speaker Biographies

Katie de Kauwe specialises in environmental judicial review, and also has expertise in cases concerning the right to protest. Katie was the lead lawyer at Friends of the Earth on the organisation’s successful challenge against the Government’s Net Zero Strategy, brought alongside ClientEarth and Good Law Project. Previously, Katie worked on Friends of the Earth’s challenge to Heathrow expansion which went to the Supreme Court in October 2020. In addition, she is part of the team working on the planning inquiry for the Whitehaven coal mine, in which Friends of the Earth is a main party and opposes the development on climate and other grounds.

Sam Hunter Jones is a senior lawyer at environmental law charity ClientEarth.  His work holds governments and businesses to account on climate change – from greenwashing to violations of human rights and failures to comply with climate change legislation.  Sam leads ClientEarth’s work on the UK’s Net Zero Strategy.

 

Nina Pindham is a specialist planning and environmental law Barrister at No5 Barristers Chambers. She advises a wide range of clients on including Defra, Local Authorities, Water Companies and Private clients, and is ranked as a leading junior in the directories for Planning and Environmental Law.
