Leading Indian environmental lawyer lecture: diary notice

Leading Indian environmental lawyer, M.C. Mehta, is in London for the 20th anniversary Garner lecture being held jointly with the Journal of Environmental Law on November 21st 2007.

The leading Indian environmental lawyer, M.C. Mehta, is in London for a major lecture on environmental protection in India, at 6pm on November 21st 2007. He is talking about public interest litigation and the role of the Supreme Court.

M.C. Mehta has almost single-handedly brought a series of leading environmental cases before the Indian Supreme Court, including pollution of the river Ganges and the Taj Mahal. He played a key role in persuading the Supreme Court that the constitutional right to life included the right to a healthy environment.

The lecture is a joint event organised by the UK Environmental Law Association and the Journal of Environmental Law at University College, London.

Attendance is free but places must be booked as space is limited.

1. M.C. Mehta founded the M.C. Mehta Environmental Foundation which, is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation working in India for the protection of the environment, rights of the people for clean and fresh water and air, promotion of sustainable development and protection of cultural heritage of India. It provides training and carries out research; has created many programmes for promoting social and environmental awareness and works at the grass roots for water and soil conservation, on forestry issues and community development.

2. The UK Environmental Law Association aims to make the law work for a better environment and to improve understanding and awareness of environmental law. UKELA’s members are involved in the practice, study or formulation of Environmental Law in the UK and the European Union. It attracts both lawyers and non-lawyers and has a broad membership from the private and public sectors. This is the 20th anniversary Garner lecture, named in memory of leading UK environmental lawyer, Professor Jack Garner.
