The UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) has welcomed a new Chair – Mark Brumwell – a solicitor specialising in environmental law. He’s joined by Tim Clare as Vice-Chair, who is an environmental consultant.

UKELA, which aims to make the law work for a better environment, will shortly publish an interim report for its current major project, reviewing the UK’s environmental law. The charity has been gathering evidence from practitioners, regulators and judges, on areas where it would be useful for the coherance, integration and accessibilty of environmental law to be improved.

Mark Brumwell said: “I’m looking forward to my time as Chair as the organisation has some significant opportunities and challenges ahead. The Coalition Government is developing a programme of legal changes which affect the environment and we want to be as helpful as we can in informing their thinking”.

“We’re also concerned with making sure that everyone has good access to information about their rights and responsibilities. We’ve got a fantastic website – www.environmentlaw.org.uk – which attracted 80,000 visitors last year. People wanted to know about issues like noisy neighbours and waste and the website provides that. Now we want to make sure we communicate our messages using other social media like Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.”

Tim Clare said: “UKELA is hugely grateful to the outgoing chair, Peter Kellett of the Environment Agency, who made such a big contribution to the organisation. We’ll be building on his work in aiming to influence more effectively, growing our membership and helping out even more people with information about environmental law”.
