UKELA Supports Paris Pledge for Action on Climate Change
Dec 09, 2015
UKELA has joined many other organisations in signing up to the “Paris Pledge for Action”, launched today in Paris as part of the COP21 programme.
“In signing the Paris Pledge, we confirm our commitment to a safe and stable climate” said Stephen Sykes, UKELA’s Chair. “We also commit to taking concrete steps to make a contribution to reducing our own greenhouse emissions and building resilience and awareness in the environmental law sector.”
Throughout 2015 there has been significant involvement of ‘non-State actors’ in the process both formally and informally, which has resulted in a positive groundswell of momentum building up towards the COP from these groups.
Kirsty Schneeberger, UKELA Trustee, currently on secondment to the UNFCCC, commented “UKELA is in good company in signing the Pledge. Non-State actor groups - such as professional bodies, business, investors and even whole cities - will be key in implementing the Paris Agreement. Their willingness to ‘do their bit’ to support the overall objective through their own climate-related actions will make an important contribution to achieving targets.”
The UK Environmental Law Association aims to make the law work for a better environment and to improve understanding and awareness of environmental law. UKELA’s members are involved in the practice, study or formulation of environmental law in the UK and the European Union. It attracts both lawyers and non-lawyers and has a broad membership from the private and public sectors.
