What we do

The scope of the Marine Working Party is to consider environmental law in the marine environment.  There is a lot going on in marine environmental law and policy - including in relation to environmental protection, offshore development, fisheries and shipping.  The Marine Working Party provides a place for multi-disciplinary discussions about current and proposed mechanisms to protect the marine environment while at the same time ensuring appropriate and sustainable use of the offshore environment by various sectors.

We do this by:

Monitoring and providing comments / observations on proposed legislation and policies;
Monitoring the implementation of existing legislation and policies;
Seeking to influence relevant legislation and policies as and when opportunities arise;
Working with and supporting the devolved administrations working parties on issues for and affecting the marine environment;
Seeking engagement with the devolved administrations on the increasingly diverse marine environment legislative frameworks;
Working with and supporting other working parties as and when necessary;
Arranging online and in-person events.

Who we are

The working party includes members working in different fields concerned with the marine environment, including those from statutory agencies and non-governmental organisations, offshore developers, fisheries, environmental consultants, lawyers in private and public practice and academics. Only UKELA members are eligible to join the working party although guests are welcome at meetings.  We are led by two co-convenors, Helen Mitcheson and Brendon Moorhouse.
