Bookings now open!

Join us for the next in our series of The Basics seminars, aimed at young UKELA members (those who are in the early stages of their career, post qualification).

We have expert speakers presenting on energy and renewables:

Ruth Juan is a solicitor specialising in energy law. She has extensive regulatory and transactional experience in projects within the power, renewables and oil & gas sectors, both in the UK and internationally, and often with a project finance dimension. Her experience includes advising on electricity interconnector development projects, gas pipeline projects, power plant projects (including IPPs, wind farms and waste to energy plants), electricity trading (including on Grid Trade Master Agreements (GTMAs), and advising a power exchange on the development of standard documentations), energy M&As, energy sector privatisations, gas purchase and gas tolling agreements, and joint operations.

Ruth trained and qualified at Dentons (including a six-month stint in their Moscow office), and subsequently worked at Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith Freehills and Ashurst. Ruth joined LexisNexis® in March 2020. She has written a number of articles which have been published in various publications.

Ruth's talk

Ruth Jaun will provide an introductory overview of the renewable energy market and regulatory framework in the UK.  She will consider the relevant legislative definitions of renewable energy, outline the key renewable generation technologies in the UK and set out the main industry participants (and their roles) in the renewable energy sector.  She will also look at energy transition and the legislative path to net zero and will outline the legislative basis for the UK’s renewable policy and regulation, including renewable energy subsidies.  Finally, Ruth will touch upon some relevant future key developments to look out for.

Gaurav Sharma is an English barrister and international arbitration specialist with particular expertise in disputes in the energy industry. He is co-chair of Quadrant Chambers’ Energy Practice Group. Gaurav is dual-qualified, having passed the Paris bar exams to become an avocat.  Before joining Quadrant, he was a senior lawyer at the specialist international arbitration law firm Three Crowns LLP.  Prior to that, he was a Senior Legal Counsel in Royal Dutch Shell’s Global Litigation group, which followed several years as an international arbitration Associate at the London and Paris offices of the international law firm, Debevoise & Plimpton.  Gaurav has written extensively on international law matters, including a forthcoming article in the 2020 edition of the European Investment Law and Arbitration Review entitled “Environmental Claims by States in Investment Treaty Arbitration”.  Gaurav was a member of the IBA’s Investment Arbitration Subcommittee from 2014-2016.  He currently serves on the ICC UK Selections Subcommittee, and sits as an arbitrator.

Guarav's talk

Gaurav Sharma will speak about the strategic decisions being taken now by the world’s major energy producers as they evolve to meet their pledges to contribute to a greener society over the coming decades.  He will examine the past, the present and the future of operations at these supergiants, and conclude by considering the potential environmental law issues that may arise as they change direction and the focus of their investments.
