Katie de Kauwe specialises in environmental judicial review, and also has expertise in cases concerning the right to protest. Katie worked on Friends of the Earth’s legal challenge to Heathrow expansion, brought on climate grounds, which went to the Supreme Court in October 2020. She is working on several communications to the Aarhus Committee concerning the UK’s compliance with the Aarhus Convention, and is working on Friends of the Earth’s campaign response to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. Katie previously worked on Friends of the Earth’s legal challenge over the government’s adoption of the revised National Planning Policy Framework without undertaking any environmental assessment. Her experience in defending civil liberties has included Friends of the Earth’s legal intervention in the Frack Free Three sentencing appeal, and the NGO’s involvement in cases against the oil and gas industry over civil injunctions which restrict protest.

Alexandra Musset  joined Friends of the Earth as a legal intern in November 2020. During her short time so far, she has supported a plastic pollution reduction campaign through legislative drafting work, assisted lawyers scope a potential legal intervention at the Court of Appeal, and worked on communications related to Freedom of Information legislation. Alexandra is a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham, she holds a first-class degree in Law and Canadian Law and spent a year abroad in Canada at the University of British Columbia. Alongside her studies she worked on various community and social justice initiatives. Of note, she worked at her university’s Refugee Clinic where she helped asylum seekers gain vital refugee status protection.  Alexandra aspires to be a solicitor, working in the environmental and human rights field.

Scott Lo is the Planning and Environmental Lawyer at The Canal & River Trust. Scott is a solicitor with a demonstrated history of working in the legal services industry in both the public and private sector.  Has volunteered with discrimination law projects, environmental projects and community schemes across the country.  Roles have included working in commercial law firms, county councils and charities.  A short stint as a court advocate, making nervous representations in front of district judges.

Emma Montlake started her legal career as a property lawyer but always wanted to move into environmental law having a deep love of nature. 15 years ago she went to volunteer with the ELF internship progamme and never quite left ELF. Today she maintains her role at ELF as Case Director, managing the Advice and Referral Service which is the pro-bono advice offer to communities for environmental legal advice along with many other management duties. Emma loves working at ELF. The variety of case work is ever fascinating and the grassroots communities that she works with are always inspiring. Emma is also a Trustee at Sussex Wildlife Trust an association she is proud of and working for ELF and SWT is a happy and symbiotic one.
